BOROUGH RATES AT RANGIORA
TOTAL INCREASED BY ONE PENNY
A general rate for the year of Hid estimated to produce £16,371, was agreed to by the Rangiora Borough Council at its monthly meeting, compared with a rate of lOd, producing £13,728, last year.
Other rates approved were as follows: street works and town hall improvement loan, Jd; hospital levy, Id; Number 2 conversion loan, 2d; drainage rate, id; water rate, lid. The total amounted to Is 4}d, compared with Is 3fd last year. The revenue other than from rates was estimated at £5753. In a minute on the estimate, the Town Clerk (Mr E. L. Briggs) said that the borough’s own rates should not need to be increased for the next two years. It was difficult, however, to anticipate what the North Canterbury Catchment Board’s rates would be even if the proposed reclassification placed the borough in a lower class. If the Lyttelton Harbour Board Empowering Bill was passed by Parliament another rate might be struck within the borough. It was unlikely, however, that the board would uroceed with any capital works within this period.
