PRODUCTION OF PIG MEATS
MAINTENANCE OF HIGH - QUALITY SOUGHT
Reporting to the annual meeting of the Canterbury District Pig Council, the chairman (Mr D. R. Petrie) said
that, although the prices from pig meats had not been maintained at the contract levels, the demand for both pork and bacon had been steady. It must be the aim of every producer to maintain a high standard of carcase quality in both pork and bacon pigs. A compulsory grading system, together with differential payments based on quality, would stimulate the production of top-class carcases, he said. “Negotiations for a breeding centre and four multiplying units are under way,” Mr Petrie said. “The need for at least one multiplying unit in the South Island was placed before the New Zealand Pig Producers’ Council, and it was suggested that Lincoln College would be the logical choice for both testing and multiplying units.” Delegates were elected as follows to form the Canterbury district council: Messrs P. G. Stevens, G. H. W. Beal, R. R. Newton, R. Lindsay, S. M. C. McCloy. W. J. West, F. Smedley, L. C. Duffell, G. S. Barwell, R. G. McLaughlin, G. Turnbull, C. Williams, J. Simpson, and W. Simpson. Messrs Stevens, Beal, Newton, West, and McCloy were elected to the management committee.
At a subsequent meeting of the management committee, Mr Petrie was re-elected chairman. He was also appointed Canterbury delegate to the New Zealand council.
