FULGENT FIT FOR WAIMATE
SMART MILE TRIAL AT RICCARTON
Fulgent showed his fitness for the Waimate Cup in a sound mile trial on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by E. G. Low, he was galloping keenly half a length in front of the Washdyke winner, Relinquish (D. J. Thistoll) at the finish. The last seven furlongs took lmin 31 l-ssec.
Rio Negro (B. S. Finlayson), another Waimate Cup candidate, galloped strongly from the mile to the half-mile in 51sec, but weakened in the straight/ and took lmin 45 4-ssec for the complete distance. Macduffs (N. Eastwood) pleased in his final trial for the Waitangi Champion Hack Handicap at Waimate. He was galloping keenly a length clear of Fleur (W. Hanlin), ending a mile in lmin 47 l-ssec, the last half in 52sec.
Artful King (A. J. Williams) and Coin’s Edge (D. F. Coombe) recorded lmin 49sec for a mile, improving slightly to run the last half in 54sec. They finished on
Dutch Flag (C. T. Wilson) sprinted seven furlongs attractively in lmin 30 2-ssec, the last four in 52sec. He is a fit horse for forthcoming engagements.
The stablemates, Detroit (A. J. Stokes) and Cloque (B. S. Finlayson) sprinted from the seven furlongs on terms in lmin 34 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Stokes has been engaged to ride Detroit, a double acceptor, in the Waimate Cup.
Ngapunawai (B. Parsons) ran home from’ the six furlongs in lmin 18sec, the last half-mile smoothly in 50 l-ssec. He made an encouraging fresh start at Washdyke last Saturday, finishing sixth in the Rangitata Handicap. San Antonio (W. Quill) led Mimbar 'E. G. Low) by a length after running six 'urlqngs in lmin 19 l-ssec, the last halfnile in 51 4-ssec.
Lord Rowallan (M. J. Wadley) could >ave bettered his time of 53 l-ssec for ■alf a mile.
The stablemates, Royal Glade (F. H. >kelton) and Dixie Lqigh (M. D. Alexander), started from the five furlongs, and an the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec, finishing on terms. Hashish (N. Eastwood) was shading the aster-finishing Gold Scheme (L. J. Ellis), ’ith Bask (C. T. Wilson) close by, after tinning five furlongs, the last four in 2 2-ssec. They were followed over the ;ame ground by Accountant (C. McDon’ld) and Adversary (A. J. Stokes) Xccountant moved well to lead his companion by a length and record 50 3-ssec or the last half-mile.
Kansas (A. J. Stokes) went at threeluarter pace from the six furlongs to the lalf-mile, then sprinted home from there n 50 4-ssec. The former North Island lorse did his work keenly. G. G. Hampton, of Riccarton, was shaken and bruised when Black Wealth fell at the third fence, the brush at the top of the straight, when following Ryeland (J. W. McDonald) over a round of the schooling fences.
Ryeland had been his usual competent self up to that point, but he ran off at the next fence, the first of the brush double. It was the first such mistake made by the Nightly gelding. He was taken back to jump the double safely. McDonald then took Black Wealth back to jump the three brush fences. • Alb (J. W. McDonald) shaped W’3ll in his run over four standard hurdles. He is a promising npvice jumper. Pinnacle (N. Bonney), a disappointment on the flat, shaped creditably when tried at the pony hurdles. ; WAIMATE SCRATCHING Lady Spouse has been scratched for the Trial Plate at Waimate tomorrow. That allows Senna to re-enter the field. Ashburton T.C.
