TRACK WORK AT WINGATUI
WAIMATE CANDIDATES SCHOOLED "The Press” Special Service A DUNEDIN, May 26. Chasemint and Wealthy will represent £ J o?°^ el , ls and J - A - Wilson’s stable in the Studholme Steeplechase at Waimate Saturday. This decision was made after both horses schooled well at Wingatui yesterday. Wealthy has had a break in his preparation tnrough injuring a leg in his yard, but he has made a quick recovery and his jumping has not been impaired by the accident. Both horses were ridden bv D. Dawson, who will ride Wealthy in his engagement. Chasemint will be ridden bv C. G. Low. Cashmere, a member of the same stable, will have his first race in the Trial Plate, in which he will be ridden by R. J Skelton. A two-year-old gelding by Cassock from Merry Vale, and thus a half-brother to Chatswin, Cashmere will race in the colours of Mr C. H. Wallis, the owner of Scuttle and Ascolta. A cold southerly with intermittent shewers made conditions most unpleasant at Wingatui this morning, and the little galloping done was on the plough and the inside grass. Emperor’s round over nine steeplechase fences, and good efforts by Algiers and Brutus oyer hurdles, were the highlights of the schooling. Emperor (S. Harrington) gave a bold display, and it was a big improvement on his jumping before the Invercargill meeting. The Royal Arch gelding will be one of H. A. Anderton’s candidates for the Otago Steeplechase, the feature event on the first day of the Wingatui winter meeting. Algiers (L. A. Coutts). which is engaged in the hurdle event at Waimate, jumped with confidence over four fences in company with his stablemate, Fair Night (G. W. Julius), which also jumped well. Keen to School Brutus (D. Dawson) , was keen to school and accomplished his task over two hurdles well. He then galloped six furlongs on the plough with Some Bounder and, after running the opening three furlongs in 40 3-ssec, they finished together in Imih 25 3-ssec. Lacus (L. A. Coutts) and Reformed (B. E. Kennedy) in a round over four hurdles did not handle the going as well as they did last week, but they both made some clever jumps to avoid trouble. Spanish Chief (S. Harrington) was inclined to run his fences down over the sod wall and double brush, but he got round safely. Aphelion (B. E. Kennedy) looks well for his engagement In the Hook Handicap. He was galloping with plenty In reserve to run five furlongs on the grass in Imin
lOsec after taking 27 3-ssec for the first two furlongs.
On the plough Gallant Peter and Lady Spouse completed half a mile in 54sec, the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec.
Lucky Dewar (B. E. Kennedy) and Gazette (J. A. Soper) were clear of Prince Consort (B. Cunningham) in 54 2-ssec, the opening furlong in 12 3-ssec. Sir Gerald (R. J. Mackie) took’ 55 2-ssec. the first furlcng in 13 3-ssec. Arm a ndo (L. W. Hare) and Mararoyal (G. A. Campbell) ran the first two furlongs in 27 3-ssec and were together at the end of five furlongs in Imin lOsec. Additionnl riding engagements for the Waimate meeting include:— J. D. Crawford: Bellows, Chief Mate, Odile. G. W. Julius: Star Chief. C. G Low: Chasemint. D. Dawson: Wealthy. B. E. Kennedy: Reformed.
