TASMAN FLIGHT BY U.S. FIGHTERS
NAVIGATION AID BY N.Z. PLANE (New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 26. A Sunderland of No. 6 Squadron. Royal New Zealand Air Force, will leave its Hobsonville base tomorrow to act as a radio positioning aircraft from the four American Thunderjets flying from Sydney to Ohakea on a good-will mission. The Sunderland will circle a position about 800 miles south-east of Sydney, transmitting signals to facilitate the navigating of the Thunder jets, which are due at Ohakea at 3 p-m. tomorrow. Four hundred miles east of Sydney and 200 miles south of Lord Howe Island, a Royal Australian Air Force Lincoln bomber will carry out the same role as the Sunderland.
When the Thunderjets fly from Whenuapai to Brisbane on June 1, the Sunderland and Lincoln will take up almost the same positions. The Sunderland will be slightly north of tomorrow’s position when it acts as a positioning aircraft for the flight from Whenuapai.
