QUALITY OF APPLES
SOME ADMITTED TO BE SOFT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 26. “I agree that some of the apples on the local market this year have not been up to the high standard tu which the public have become accustomed in the last five "years,” said Mr J. H. Parker, chairman of the Apple and Pear Marketing Board, today, commenting on complaints about the poor quality of some of the apples being sold on the market. The public must realise, however, that apples are living things and not manufactured articles, Mr Parker said. “This year the growers in Hawke’s Bay had a severe frost, and the main source of fruit supply is Nelson,” he said. “In this district the season was subject to a long spell of drought, followed by a period of heavy rain and then exceptionally humid weather. “Some of the fruit near maturity swelled rapidly and later proved to be of a soft texture. Later varieties are naturally firmer -and harder and should be good keeping quality.’’
