It wasa poor lookout for the Maori race, the Magistrate added, if the responsible Maori eminent at Ngaruawahia could not take the matter in hand and have some influence on the behaviour of Maoris in the town and district. The Magistrate was sentencing two young men to probation on charges oi assault and the theft of a crate of stout at Ngaruawahia on May 20. Police evidence showed that the two had drunk liquor in the Delta Hotel from 5.30 p.m. till 11 pan., then gone to the Waipa Hotel and taken the crate cf stout. The Magistrate said that apparently decent young men were in trouble partly because of the uncontrolled use of liquor. An action against a hotel was pending as a result of the case he added.
