U.S. RELATIONS WITH JAPAN

“Eyeing Each Other Warily”

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) TOKYO, May 25. General Maxwell Taylor, the United Nations Far East Commander, said today that Japan and the United States were “eyeing each other warily across the table.”

General Taylor, who will become the American Army Chief of Staff next month, urged a greater sense of partnership between the two countries, especially in defence matters.

He told the Foreign Correspondents’ Club: “Our Far East problem is one of partnership—matching our assets and nullifying our liabilities.” General Taylor said there was a £tr?nger partnership feeling between America and South Korea than between America and Japan.
