Helicopter Crash Kills Two

LONDON, May 25. Air Vice-Marshal Sir Francis Mellersh, aged 56, was killed today when a naval helicopter crashed near him at West Itchen, Sussex. One of the helicopter crew of two was also killed. The air marshal retired from the Royal Air Force last year as Com-mandant-General of the Royal Air Force. Regiment. He was Air Officer Commanding in Malaya from 1949 to 1951.

He was standing on a jetty directing the helicopter down when one of its rotor blades struck the mast of a dinghy moored nearby. The helicopter—a Sikorsky Dragonfly—turned on its side out of control, crashed on to the jetty and fell into the water.
