MEAT SUPPORT PRICES

MINISTER ADDRESSES FARMERS (New Zealand Press Association) WHAKATANE, May 23. There seemed to be many advantages in not making meat support prices too high, said the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) today. He was speaking at the annual provincial conference of Bay of Plenty Federated Farmers. It would be better to introduce the available money when it was really needed, he said. Whatever money had been taken from the industry still belonged to it, and would be returned as and when it was considered advisable. Discussions were going on now, and these centred cn the problem of finding some inrmula on which support prices could be based. The pool money had come out of taxation. Government borrowing, or Government printing, said the Minister. “There is no such thing as this money being tucked away, as some people think,” he said. “The money has already been spent on development projects.”
