SOVIET NAVAL STRENGTH
PARIS, May 22. Rear-Admiral Jerauld Wright, commander of the N.A.T.O. forces in the Atlantic, said today that the Soviet Navy was now a potent force which posed a serious threat to the security and freedom of the seas enjoyed by the United States and her allies. He said that the Soviet Union was the world’s second largest naval Power, ranking only behind the United States. The Soviet fleet possessed more than 379 submarines, a large number of fast cruisers and destroyers, and an air wing of more than 3000 jet aircraft, he said.
