ATHLETICS RECORD ATTEMPT FAILS
2000 METRE RUN BY GORDON PIRIE (NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 21. The British runner, Gordon Pirie, failed by 2.Bsec in an attempt on the world 2000 metres record, held by the Belgian, Gaston Reinf, during the Universities' athletics championships at White City, Manchester, today. He covered the distance (one mile 427 yards) in smin B.Bsec—-the second fastest time ever recorded. Geoff Ibbotson, of Yorkshire, took over the pace-making duties for the last two laps, and left Pirie to make the final attempt at the bell.
