ROAD RACES HELD BY CLUBS Christchurch Amateur Cycling Club held a 25-mile out-and-home handicap race on Saturday. An invitationwas extended to the Avon Club to take part, and 50 riders started. R. Porter, riding from a front mark, held on in the final sprint to beat J. Smith by l-ssec for first place. R. Fowler gained fastest time, 60min llsec., P. Wylie had gear trouble just as the scratch riders started to sprint for the line. At the turn Fowler made an’ attempt to shake off his co-markers, Wylie, G. Painter, and M. Boers, and rode for four miles on his own, when he was caught. Results:— R. Porter, 67min 15sec, 1; J. Smith, 67min 15.1 sec, 2; B. Lang, 67min 16sec, 3; N. Henry, 68min llsec, 4. Fastest time: R. Fowler (scr), 60min llsec. PAPANUI CLUB When the Papanui Club held a 25-mile handicap out-and-home race, K. Cattermole fought out a desperate finish with his co-marker, B. Cooper, and won by l-ssec. J. Spencer retained his fastest time record when he covered the distance in 61min y 2Bsec. He was hard pressed by his co-marker, I. Dawson, who finished only l-ssec behind. Results:— K. Cattermole (lOmin), 68min 15sec, 1; B. Cooper (lOmin), 68min 15.2 sec, 2; R. Letford (7min), 66min 33sec, 3. Fastest time: S- Spencer (scr), 61min 28sec. MAIREHAU NOVICE WHEELMEN Graham Chinnery, aged 12, of Belfast, competed in his first cycle race on Saturday in the Mairehau Novice Wheelmen’s five and a half miles handicap. Riding a sports cycle with mudguards attached, Chinnery won after shaking off his co-marker, A. Good, early in the race. He rode on alone to cover the distance in 17mirr 51sec. Two scratch riders, T. Weir and T. Sheppherd, had a tussle for time honours, Weir gaining the decision by l-10sec. Results:— G. Chinnery (6min), 17min 51sec, 1; P. Doyle (3min), 14min 55sec, 2; K. Prebble (4min), 15min 55.1 sec, 3; A. Good (6min), 18min 9sec, 4. Fastest time: T. Weir (scr), 13min 39sec. HORNBY NOVICE CLUB The Hornby Novice Cycling Club held a five mile handicap event on Saturday, R. Martlew for the second week in succession taking first place and fastest time off the scratch mark. Results:— R. Martlew 1, R. Harrison 2, B. Burney 3, N. Graham 4. Fastest time: R. Martlew, 12min 45sec.
