HIGH SEAS ON WEST COAST
WATER OVER ROAD AT RAPAHOE (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, May 20. Rough seas, whipped by strong winds, washed over the main highways in the Cnhden and Seven Mile areas on the West Coast last night and today. There was water to a depth of two feet on the main highway to Westport at Rapahoe this morning and traffic was held up «for two hours. The sea waters washed into four Cobden properties overnight and again this morning, the sea actually running beneath one of the newest houses in Cobden, but damage was not extensive. Waves topped the protective shingle bank and flowed over front lawns and gardens. Because of power failures, both the Strongman and Liverpool State coal mines were idle today, the ventilation fans having- been stopped during the night. Co-operative coal mines in the area were similarly affected. A score dr more service lines in Greymouth and surrounding districts came down during the night, leaving without power for varying periods. Telephone circuits were also disrupted through trees being blown across lines between Otira and Jackson. Lines in the Harihari-Wataroa district were affected by lightning.
