CATCHMENT BOARD
FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM DISCUSSED
It was the opinion of members at the quarterly meeting of the Westland Catchment Board that the provision of a satisfactory emergency flood warning system for the West Coast was impracticable. The need for an emergency organisation was advanced following the February floods and the request was referred to the Greymouth Borough Council. Where possible the board was making arrangements for the telephoning of flood warnings and up-to-date weather reports covering local weather conditions were being sought from the meteorological service of the Air Department. When a hydrologist was appointed by the board, it would be possible to collect more information, as gauging stations would be established on some of the rivers.
Commenting on the Coal creek protection scheme, the chairman, Mr F. F. Boustridge, said that the financial aspects of the £20,000 project had to be examined with a view to estimating what contributions could be expected from Government departments and the settlers. After such matters had been finalised they could get on with the job. 'he said.
