NEW HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING
Several Additions Announced
SHIRLEY TO OPEN IN 1957 Substantial building additions -to almost every high school within the next year were promised by ft* EdUj cation Department to the Christchurch Post-primary Schools’ Council lest evenfog. The announcements are summarised a* follows: Avenside Girls’ High School.-Archi-tects will be instructed immediately to call tenders for a new assembly hall to be built to plans already prepared. Christehureh Wert High architect will be appointed Immediately to prepare plans for a new assembly hell, 7Mt by s«ft, with Stage and two dressing rooms, In permanent material* at a cost of about £20,000. The new laboratory block will be ready at the start of next term.
Fepanoi High School.—The Ministry of Works has been instructed to adapt a Henderson-type assembly hall plan and it is hoped that tenders will be called shortly.
Christchurch Boys’ High School.— Ministry of Works sketch plans for extending the laboratory wing have been approved by the council, subject to the school board’s consent. They provide a classroom and preparation room on the ground floor (where a carriageway will pass between the new wmg and the main school building) and a laboratory, preparation room, teachers’ room, and career adviser’s room on the upper floor (which will extend over the carriageway).
Christchurch Giris’ High School.— The calling of tenders for additions to the hostel have been authorised. The Education Department is investigating the possibility of building a school block at the rear of the apartment house on the property recently acquired immediately west of the school ta Armagh street
Cashmere High School. —The Ministry of Works has given an assurance that stage one will be ready for occupation at the beginning of next year and stage two at the beginning of 1957. The Post-primary Schools’ Council is proceeding immediately to have itself constituted an interim board for the school, enrolments will be received for third form pupils from June 1, and arrangements will be made immediately to call applications for the position of headmaster.
Shirley Boys' High School.—This is one of 11 schools ta New Zealand approved for construction on the new cluster plan and it is intended that it should open ta February, 1957, for 300 pupils, have additions later for another 100, and be ultimately developed for 600.
New High School.—lt is envisaged that a new high school will be opened in 1958 or 1959 on either the Burnside road site, Fendalton, or the Curlett’s road site, Upper Biccarton.
The chairman of the council (Mr W. J. Cartwright) said members had never before received so much welcome news at one meeting. The three assembly halls were all for schools whose earlier plans had been held over and would simply meet essential -requirements.
