NEW SOURCE OF CHILLED BEEF
POSSIBILITIES IN RHODESIA (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 26. . Rhodesia might become a new source of chilled beef supplies for Britain, if experiments there proved successful, states the “Daily Telegraph’s agricultural correspondent. He says, that the aim of the movers in the scheme, who are headed by Viscount Hudson, war-time Minister of Agriculture, who began ranching in Southern Rhodesia in the post-war years, is to provide chilled beef during the winter months when British home-killed supplies are scarce. Viscount Hudson is concentrating on producing animals which mature much, earlier than the four, five and even six year required in the Dominions. Steers: bred from native Afrikaners, crossed with; British beef breeds, can mature much! earlier when their feed is supplemented during the winter, a practice not normally adopted by ranchers. Beasts killed at two years nine montbs have provided first quality beef, Viscount Hudson stated. An expert from Smithfield has been invited to go to Rhodesia in September to advise on the killing and and proper type and size of beast. If his report showed the scheme - could ® n experimental shipment of chiHed beef to Britain would be made The . likely port for shipS SS* 5SS ly be Eeira ' in Portu - OVERSEAS EXCHANGE RATES
