HALF-A-CROWN DEAD

WINNER OF £2670 FOR MR P. D. HALL Mr P. D. Hall’s promising Royal Chief— Sixpence gelding, Half-a-Crown, was found dead in his box at the Riccarton stable of C. G. Humphries last week. It is thought that he died from a heart ailment. Half-a-Crown was purchased as a yearling by Humphries, but did all hia racing in the colours of Mr Hall, for whom he earned £2670. He created a big impression when he won his way out of hacks with three successive victories earlier this season, and he confirmed it by winning the Manawatu Freyberg Handicap. At the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting, after finishing solidly for third in the Dominion Handicap, Half-a-Crown was solidly supported to win the Sockburn Handicap on the final day. However, he tailed the field all the way.
