WAIMAIRI PUBLIC CEMETERY
COUNTY COUNCIL TO ASSUME CONTROL
The Waimairi County Council has agreed to assume control of the Waimairi Cemetery from the Waimairi Public Cemetery Board. The board has requested this step because it can see no hope of balancing its budget without assistance from the council.
The board advised the council that, at a meeting on April 5, it had been decided that, because of the present rate of burials and increasing commitments for expenditure, there was no likelihood of its balancing its budget in the near future without continued and regular financial assistance from the council.
Realising that the council would be able to administer the cemetery more economically under its direct control, the board had resolved unanimously that the council be asked to take over control as soon as possible, said the letter. On March 31, the board’s overdraft at the bank was £ 159 19s 9d. The council placed on record its appreciation of the services of members of the board. On the suggestion of Cr. J. I. Colligan, the council’s finance committee will be asked to consider the possibility of erecting a crematorium in the cemetery.
