WITHDRAWAL SLIPS FORGED

ACCUSED REMANDED FOR SENTENCE

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, April 13. When Harry Steve Polata, aged 23, a labourer, offered to help a fellow Niue Islander named Kaufisi to start a Post Office Savings Bank account, Kaufisi thought it was a good idea, but he was dismayed when he found that most of the money had been withdrawn by someone using his name. He called in the police, and his friend acted as interpreter when Kaufisi told his story. But Detective R. Parsons became suspicious of the interpreter. The sequel was heard in the Magistrate’s Court today when Polata pleaded guilty to six charges of obtaining £49 by forging Post Office Savings Bank withdrawal slips in the name of Kaufisi.

Mr J. W. Kealy. S.M., remanded Polata for a week for sentence.
