MINOR FIRES
No damage was caused when a fire broke out in a hedge on a property occupied by Mr L. K. Jones at 9 Seamount terrace early yesterday afternoon. The fire was put out by units from the Woolston and Central Fire Stations which received a call at 12.9 p.m.
One unit from each of the Central and St. Albans stations went to a grass fire burning beside the railway line near Elair avenue at 1.24 p.m. There was no damage and the fire was extinguished without difficulty. At 3.20 p.m. the ‘Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade and one unit from the Woolston station were called to a grass fire in Redcljffs. Although the fire ran across three 'properties no damage was done. The properties are in Monck’s Spur and belong to Miss Catherine McEwen, Mr Gordon Davis and the Christchurch City Council. A grass fire on the hillside in Bridle Path road, Heathcote, was attended by a unit from headquarters and one from Woolston, which were called at 7 p.m. The fire occurred on Mr Geoffrey Munnings’s property and caused no damage.
Severe damage was done to an electric locomotive which caught fire in the Woolston railway yards. A call to the fire at 7.16 p.m. was answered by two units from headquarters.
