FIRE CALLS LAST YEAR
RECORD NUMBER OF 1151 ANSWERED
The 1151 calls answered by the Christchurch Fire Brigade in the year ended on March 31 were a record. In the previous year there were 1025 calls. As the board’s area and the city expanded, so did the. number of calls increase, reported the chief fire officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) to the Christchurch Fire Board last evening. The record number was not attributable to any particular cause such as dry weather. Drawing attention to the number of cases of fires caused by overheated electric ovens and painters burning off, Mr Osmond said both were the result of straight-out carelessness. Last month the brigade answered 89 calls, compared with 71 in March, 1954. Thirty-two were to grass and rubbish fires, six to chimney fires and 29 were false alarms, four of them malicious.
