Press Strike May Cripple One London Daily
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 12. There are strong rumours in London that one national morning newspaper will not continue publication after the newspaper strike is settled because of crippling losses caused by the suspension of publication. The national newspapers have lost an estimated £1,500,000 net since 700 maintenance men went on strike over a wage increase demand 19 days ago. The draft report of the three-man court of inquiry into the strike is expected to be handed to the Labour Minister (Sir Walter Monckton) later today, but the report of the court, which has no power to enforce a settlement, is not likely to be printed and distributed to the parties until tomorrow. Labour Ministry conciliators will work at top pressure trying to secure a settlement on the basic of the report’s recommendations before dismissal notices affecting 20,000 take effect on Friday.
