OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL
Sir, —The parents in the Oxford district are uneasy. The year is progressing, and there are still no signs of the promised new high school building. We constantly read of new schools being opened, of assembly halls planned: but in our district 61 children and three teachers still work in three separate buildings—a science room, which is about 40 years old, and has been shifted from another site; the inevitable “prefab.”, and last but not least, a derelict building which was rescued by the local parents and fitted out as a cafeteria for a well-organised hot dinner scheme, only to be confiscated by the Education Board just as it became habitable. Your readers will understand that we in Oxford long for the sound of hammers, saws, and concrete mixers on the school premises.—Yours, etc., CINDERELLA. Oxford, March 10, 1955. [The project is in the planning stage and it is hoped that the new building will be ready at the beginning of next year, said Mr L. S. P. Butcher, secretary and manager of the Canterbury Education Board, when he was asked to comment on this letter.]
