LAKE SUMNER AREA
VIRTUES AS SCENIC RESORT
ACCESS DISCUSSED BY PROGRESS LEAGUE
The Lake Sumner area should be developed as a scenic resort for the people of Canterbury, said members of the Canterbury Progress League at a meeting yesterday. Mr A. R. Blank reported that a letter from the Lands and Survey Department had said there was still no prospect of surveyors being available for work in the area, because of other jobs with higher priorities. However, a plan had been submitted. “Think how fine it would be for the people of Canterbury if there was a road to this scenic area, held from the public for many years, for farmers who have kept the gem to themselves,” he said. “The time has arrived when we must persist in getting something done to make visits to the lake possible. That has been further held up because a surveyor has not been available.”
Mr Blank said that, as far as a road to the area was concerned, it was just a trivial matter. He believed that, if 100 sections were sold, the buyers themselves would help with the road. All that was needed was a surveyor for the sections, which were on Crown land.
At the suggestion of the chairman (Mr E. C. Bathurst), the matter was referred to the league’s highways committee to press for a survey to be done and to secure information on whether the sections should be leasehold or freehold!
