Jack Wardrop, of Scotland, broke the world record for the 400-yard individual medley last night with a time of 4min 36.95ec, in the United States men’s indoor swimming championships. _ Wardrop’s time was nearly osec better than the old record. Earlier, Bob Gawboy, of the University of Minnesota, broke the record for the 220-vard breaststroke when he won the event in 2min 38sec. The previous record of 2min was set by Knud Gleic. of Denmark, eight months ago. Ford Konno, of Hawaii, retained his 220-yard freestyle title, beating Wardrop. Konno’s time was 2min (Msec, better than the listed world record, but Wardrop had a time of 2min 3.4 sec at tnat distance on March 4. Konno’s victory was a meeting record.
