RESEARCH WORK NEAR POLE

Soviet Team Enters Canadian Waters

(Rec. 10 p.m.) OTTAWA, Feb. 23. Canadian officials said today they had learned that a Soviet team doing research work on the Polar ice cap operated last year in far north waters claimed by Canada. The officials said their information came from a recently acquired Soviet pamphlet, and they had no reason to doubt it was true.

The Soviet Union has established two permanent research stations on polar ice floes. One, known as Norm Pole HI, was set up at 86 degrees N. latitude and 176 degrees W. longitude. Its last known position— September, 1954, —was 89 degrees N. latitude and 54 degrees W. longitude. Presumably the drift station, in moving round the Pole, was at one time in territory which Canada claims. The area is near the North Pole.

An Ottawa authority said it was possible the station would again move into Canadian territory. He said that no ulterior motive was suspected.
