BLEAK SPELL IN BRITAIN

‘Coldest Night In 60 Years’

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 23. Royal Air Force planes today dropped more fodder to sheep in North Scotland than was delivered in the whole nine days of the first “Operation Snowdrop” last month. The amount dropped today was 182 tons in more than 30 flights. In the last five days planes have dropped more than 38 tons. Perth, in Eastern Scotland, had the coldest night in 60 years with 28 degrees of frost. Buses were stranded in the city with frozen brakes and radiators. In Sheffield, Yorkshire, snow clearing so far this winter has cost more than £40,000. Britain’s West Country caught the full force of a blizzard today. Nearly all main roads in the counties of Devon and Cornwall were blocked by 6ft snow drifts.

About 70 cars and trucks are stranded on Cornwall roads.

Drivers and passengers stuck in the wilds of Bodmin-Moor were rescued by snow ploughs. Hundreds of sheep and some cattle are feared to have died in the snow today.

On Dartmoor ponies were wandering around houses and farms during the night in search of- food, with icicles hanging from their coats.
