LABOUR AND SOCIAL CREDIT
Sir, —I would direct the attention of “Citizen” to the result of the Riccarton municipa) by-election, wherein a total of 1861 Votes were cast for each issue. A little simple arithmetic shows that the Social Credit candidate who polled 250 votes, took 226'from the Citizens and only 24 from Labour. On this basis it can be assumed that if Social Credit had not split the General Election vote, then Labour would have gained no seats, but lost all their marginal seats as well. Any normal person can draw this conclusion from the Riccarton result, but possibly “Citizen” was told not to read these figures. As for the “Tory inspired depression,” this affected New Zealand after it occurred in England, and England had a Socialist government in power. Therefore, instead we should say that the depression was a product of Socialist blundering, which is, of course, far more probable.—Yours, etc., VIC TORY. February 24, 1955.
