BIG BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENTS
Sir, —I was amused to read that a millionaire, Mr Lord, was quoted today as saying: “Big business in America runs the Government ... in Britain there is not the same pressure.” May I quote from “Secret History,” by Francis Williams, C.8.E., war-time director of British censorship, regarding the British Government under Baldwin. “Baldwin agreed on a small rearmament programme. Out of over £7,600,000 raised to finance aircraft manufacturing expansion in the first six months of the programme, less than a twelfth— £6l2,oB3—went to build factories. The rest went into the pockets of promoters and stockbrokers.” An impartial investigation into British history reveals that imperialism and commercialism have gone hand in glove for the last 400 years. Hypocrisy makes up. the trio.— Yours, etc., SCEPTIC. February 24, 1955.
