AMERICAN WOMEN’S Tour

VISIT TO CHRISTCHURCH NEXT MONTH

Two leading American women swimmers will appear at the Centennial Pool next month as part of their tour through New Zealand. They are Mrs Patricia McCormick and Miss Shelly Mann. Both are world-record holders, and Mrs McCormick is an Olympic champion diver. On February 16 and .17 they will be the main attractions at a carnival organised by the Canterbury Swimming Centre. At the 1952 Olympic Games, Mrs McCormick won the three metre springboard and high tower diving events. In both events she was awarded more points than any competitor had previously gained. Miss Mann is noted as a versatile swimmer. She holds the world record for 100 yards butterfly and the 440 yards medley. She was a member of the relay team that broke two records at the Olympic Games, and is holder of American titles for 100 yards backstroke, 100 yards butterfly, and 440 yards medley. Miss Mann holds the current American records for 100 yards and 100 metres backstroke, 100 yards and 100 metres butterfly, 440 yards individual medley, and the world records for 100 metres butterfly, 100 yards butterfly, and 400 yards freestyle relay team.
