Seasons.—There can be no absolute division of the calendar into seasons: according to climatic regions the seasons vary in length frorp place to place. It is. conventionally assumed, however, that each season commences at the equinox or solstice. These periods fall on September 22 or 23, about December 22, March 20, and June 22. But because statistical data is readily available according to calendar months, it is convenient to divide the vear into groups of months. In the southern hemisphere spring is commonly said to include September, October and November; summer. December to February; autumn, March to May; winter, June to August. The shortest and longest days of the year are at the solstices, when the sun is most distant from the equator—December 22 and June 21.
