BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN

SEAT RETAINED BY CONSERVATIVES

LONDON. January 21. Sir Winston Churchill’s Conservatives easily held the Parliamentary seat for Orpington in a by-election yesterday. The result, declared today, was: Donald Sumner (Conservative), 20,082 votes; David Vaughan-Williams (Labour), 10,426. Conservative majority. 9656.

The vacancy was caused by the death of Sir Waldron Smithers, aged 74, member for 30 years, who at the 1951 General Election had an 11,003 majority over Mr Vaughan-Williams, a 27-year-old journalist.
