TWINS IN POLICE FORCE
CONFUSION LEADS TO ASSAULT CHARGE
ACCUSED COMPLAINS OF QUESTIONING (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 21. Aggrieved by what seemed to him repeated questioning, Stanley Harris, aged 24, a ship’s fireman, assaulted Constable James Francis Glynn at 3.45 a.m. today. But what he did not know was that two policemen had questioned him—and they were twins. Harris, for whom Mr Lloyd Brown appeared, admitted the charge of assault in the Magistrate’s Court today. Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, S.M., was on the Bench.
Sub-Inspector M. E. Parker said that Constable J. F. Glynn questioned Harris when he found him loitering near a doorway. Harris said he was sick of being “hunted by cops,” and as the constable was noting his name and address, Harris pushed the notebook out of the constable’s hand.
“Harris then suddenly struck the constable a blow on the side of the face, and also attempted to kick him,” said Sub-Inspector Parker. Mr Brown said Harris felt a sense of grievance, because he thought the same constable had stopped and questroned him on two previous occasions in the street. This had annoyed Harris. However, he was wrong. The constable who had twice questioned him was the identical twin brother of the one who arrested him today. “That is quite correct,” said SubInspector Parker. “Both are in the force in Auckland.”
“Harris did not strike a blow until the constable had seized him by the scruff of the neck, I am instructed,” said Mr Brown. “Harris is excitable by nature.” “Well, he must learn to control his fists,” said the Magistrate, in fining Harris £7.
