Statement From Formosa

(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) TAIPEH, Jan. 20. The Chinese Nationalist authorities claimed today that the Nationalist planes which yesterday raided the South China port of Swatow, had sunk a “foreign tanker.” They said the tanker might now prove to be the British freighter Edendale.

A Defence Ministry spokesman said: “Since the outbreak of the Quemoy fighting last September we have declared the Fukien coast, including the main ports of Amoy and Swatow, as a war zone subject to our bombing. “We have also served notice to all friendly nations to keep away their shins from that area. “If any foreign ship is bombed or sunk it is at its own risk, and we are not to be held responsible.”

The Nationalist Air Force withheld comment.
