SNAKE KILLS 42 STUD SHEEP

LOSS ON N.S.W. FARM (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

SYDNEY, January 20 A tiger snake yesterday killed 42 stud, sheep worth nearly £lOOO on a property near Oberon, New South Wales. < The manager of the property said the snake killed the sheep in three hours. He is Mr M. E. Kinslea, of the Sweetbriar Stud, 10 miles from Oberon, who said he drove about 60 sheep into a yard near the homestead at 10 a.m.

When he returned to the yard just before 1 p.m. he noticed many of the sheep on the ground. The sheep, which were mostly ewes and lambs, were blue. He noticed snake bites on nearly every one. Mr Kinslea said that as he was walking among the dead sheep he noticed a 4ft tiger snake slither under the sheep dip. He killed the snake with a stick. Mr Kinslea said the snake had obviously been trodden on by the sheep. The curator of snakes at the Australian Museum said he was amazed at one snake killing so many sheep. But tests had proved that a tiger snake carried more than 100 lethal doses of venom as far as sheep were concerned, he said.
