LYTTELTON NEWS

MAGISTRATE’S COURT William Head a seaman, aged 44, was charged before Messrs F. E. Sutton and A. B. P. Large, of the Peace, at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday with disorderly behaviour while drunk. He was convicted and fined £l. On a further charge of using obscene language, he was convicted and fined £5.

Borough Council * The Lyttelton Borough Council decided last evening to circularise the different organisations interested inviting them to send representatives to a meeting to consider adopting some means of making public recognition of the services of Mr F. H. Heal to the town of Lyttelton. • The y action was taken in response to a letter from the Lyttelton sub-centre of the St John Ambulance Association. The letter stated that Mr Heal, who recently left Lyttelton to reside in Riccarton, had been an active worker for several bodies in Lyttelton, including the ambulance, scouts, centennial and patriotic committees. Mr Heal had also given several years’ service as a borough councillor. Cr. W. Morris was appointed to represent the council on the Road Safety Committee. The council decided that the Christmas and New Year holidays for the staff should be from nopn on Friday till 8 a.m. on Wednesday on both weekends. Diamond Harbour Pipe-line The Lyttelton Borough Council decided last evening to approach the Lyttelton Harbour Board with a request for a further conference regarding the underwater pipe-line to Diamond Harbour. A motion that the council take action to promulgate a local bill that would protect the council’s rights regarding the pipe-line was defeated. Referring to the intention of the harbour board to promulgate a bill, Cr. A. M. Miller said it was deplorable that two local bodies should be a variance on such a matter. There was no Ul-feling between the council and the harbour board, said the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs). Both bodies had interests to protect. The council sought only to protect the citizens of Diamond Harbour. Cr. F. Barrett said he was sure that the matter could be settled amicably between the two bodies. He moved that the council ask the harbour board again to confer on the matter.

The harbour board had refused arbitration. said Cr. W. Morris.

The motion was carried. The Mayor, Councillors W. B. Laing and W. Morris and the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) were appointed to represent the council at the conference.
