Waikuku Beach.—An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs 3. McLeod on the making of Christmas novelties at the monthly meeting of the Waikuku Beach Country Women’s Institute. Mrs A. Richards, the president, presented the birthday sprays. Arrangements were made for the Christmas party. A parcel is to be sent to the lepers. Competitions resulted:—Small bloom: Mesdames E. Sollitt 1, H. Matthews 2, L. Cumming 3. Large bloom: Mrs K. Webb 1, Mrs J. Humm 2, Mrs E. Frost 3. Spike: Mesdames Webb 1, W. Johnson 2, Frost 3. Cluster: Mesdames W. Johnson 1, Woodgate 2, A. Richards 3. Prettiest cup and saucer: Mesdames M. Fitzgibbon 1, A. Richards 2. Woodgate 3. Blackberry jam: Mesdames Cumming 1, B. Chapman 2, Webb J. Lettuce: Mesdames Frost 1, Cumming 2 Matthews 3. Orange cup: Mesdames Webc I, Richards 2, Frost 3. Kaiapoi.—lnternational Day was observed at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi Country Women’s Institute. Several new settlers from Holland were welcomed by Mrs Candy. Mrs Fitzgerald reported on the half-yearly meeting. Arrangements were made for the Christmas party to -be given to the elderly women of Kaiapoi. A Christmas cake has been sent to the link in Ninfield. Giszanne Monk and Fay Quinn gave a Dutch dance and Mrs Van Schootenxgave an interesting talk on Holland. Competitions resulted: Small bloom: Mrs Palmer 1, Mrs Johnson 2, Miss P. Pearce 3. Small spike: Mrs Palmer 1, Mrs Hide 2, Mrs J. Johnson 3. Large spike: Mrs C. Johnson 1, Mrs J. Tourell 2, Mrs Collister 3. Large bloom: Mrs C. Johnson 1, Mrs Hide and Mrs Johnson (equal) 2, Mrs Tourell 4. Three polyanthus: Mrs Tourell 1, Mrs Hide 2, Mrs Fitzgerald 3. Asparagus: Mrs C. Johnson 1, Mrs Collister 2.
Sumner.—The birthday party of the Sumner Country Women’s Institute Was held recently. Mrs P. T. Mauger. the president, welcomed representatives from Mount Pleasant, Burwood, Bryndwr, North Beach, South Brighton, Mairehau, Heathcote, Hillmorten, and the institute centre, and the present and past presidents of Canterbury Federation. The cake was made and iced by Mrs R. Baldwin. Sprays were presented to the visitors and artists. Mrs J. Mason and Miss Gilmore gave duets, Miss Ayleen Robson sang solos, recitations were presented by Mrs H. May, and a one-act comedy was given by the Sumner Drama Club, those taking part being Mesdames I. Cook, M. Mauger. P. Al’'.rd, J. Quane, and Miss Robson. The annual prize for best bloom was won by Mrs Gulliford. Mrs M. Merrells won the jniscellaneous competitions, including the silver cup for aggregate points, and one for most entries.
