CRICKET

TEAMS OF CLERGY PLAY AT ASHBURTON An entertaining cricket match between two teams of Anglican clergymen was played in the Ashburton Domain yesterday. The match was played in a very light-hearted mood, but some of the older members of the teams batted extremely well, although their running between the wickets was rather slow. The best batting scores were made by the Rev. A. G. Georgantis, curate of Ashburton (76), the Rev. A. A. Purchas, of St. Mary’s, Timaru (69), the Rev. L. E. Cartridge, vicar of Waimate (49), and the Rev. J. S. H. Perkins, vicar of Te Ngawai (44). The Rev. Mr Georgantis was also the best bowler, and took four wickets. The Rev. W. Heerdegen, vicar of Rangiora, did well to take three wickets with his slow off-spinners. The Rev. Mr Purchas gave a sparkling display of batting for his 69, against bowling that was at times erratic, but accurate enough to capture a wicket when the batsmen made wild swings. Other clergymen taking part were the Rev. R. W. Blair, chaplain at Bumham Military Camp, the Rev. Robert Lowe, vicar of St. John’s, Highfield, the Ven. R. Plaistowe, Archdeacon of Timaru, the Rev. R. P. Andrews, and the Rev. J. D. Froud, vicar of Ashburton.
