WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Mairehau.—Mrs Judd gave a report on the Dominion conference at the monthly meeting of the Mairehau Country Women’s Institute. After the meeting Mrs Baker presented a United Nation’s flag, made by two members, to the Mairehau school. Competition results werecookery: Mesdames Boyd 1, Thompson 2 Kime 1 3. Handwork: Mesdames Boyd .1, Scott 2, Ullrich and Webster (equal) 3. Succulent garden: Mesdames Parkins 1, Kime 2, Ullrich 3. Three meringues: Mrs Weastell 1, Mrs Moon 2, Mrs Neale 3. . Canterbury Federation.—Mrs W. Pattison presided at the October meeting of the executive committee of the Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes and welcomed the voluntary organisers. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs Candy in her husband’s illness. It was reported that the profits from the tent at the Ellesmere show had added a substantial sum to the building fund. The final arrangements for the half-yearly meeting at Akaroa were discussed and it was hoped that an opportunity would be given for visits to interesting and historic places. Mrs Prebble reported on the recent conference of co-ordinating committees. It was decided to send a remit to the Dominion council meeting on the advisability of giving life membership to members of long standing. The financial statement was deemed satisfactory, and the broadcast arrangements for 1955 were outlined.

Springston.—Mrs T. B. Howson presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Springston Country Women’s Institute. Birthday were presented to 'several members. A combined family evening and children’s party and arrangements for the trip to Akaroa for the half-yearly federation meeting were discussed. An invitation to Lincoln Country Women’s Institute birthday concert was received. Mrs Mclntosh Of the St. John Ambulance Association gave an interesting instructive talk on first aid in the home, for which she was thanked and presented with a floral ■spra/. A sales table did good business. Hostesses were Mesdames O. T. Bajley and R. W. Blackmore. Competition results were:—small bloom: Mrs S. J. Wall 1, Mrs C. E. T. Ellmers 2. Mrs J. F. Blackmore 3. Lakeside.—The Lakeside Country Women’s Institute celebrated its eighteenth birthday party with an enjoyable programme given by the Christchurch Country Women’s Institute centre concert party. There was a good attendance and visiting members of other branches were welcomed by the president (Mrs L. Cooper). Mrs Pattison president of the Canterbury Federation cut the birthday cake made by Mrs W. Quigley and iced by Mrs F. Chambers. Flowers were presented to the officers, vice-presidents, Miss Lewton (group convener) and Mrs Ray (leader of the concert party). Mrs Pattison received a sheaf of flowers. The vice-presidents Mrs Hampton and Miss Hantz lit the candles on the cake and Mrs Cooper extinguished them. A motion of sympathy was accorded Mrs D. Macra.e in her bereavement. The gift of a bell and spoon to be forwarded to the link in Dorset for Xmas was on display. It was announced that the monthly meeting would be held a week later than the usual day in November to avoid clashing with the Christchurch show. Competition awards were as follows:—best bloom: Mesdames McLaughlin 1 and 3, L. Cooper 2. Spike: Miss Hantz 1, Mrs Hampton 2. and 3. Bowl of flowers: Mrs H. McLaughlin 1, Mrs T. Gulliver 2, Mrs L. Cooper 3. Flowering shrub: Mrs Cooper 1, Mrs T. Gulliver 2, Miss Hantz* 3. Shortbread: Mesdames T. Gulliver 1 and 2, Cooper 3. Smocked article: Miss Hantz. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.
