Demonstration Of New U.S. Jet

(Rec. 9 p.m.) CHINA LAKE (California*, Nov. 6. The smallest and lightest jet combat aircraft in the United States, the Douglas A4D Skyhawk, was demonstrated in public for the first time yesterday. The bantam Navy bomber flew past a crowd of aviation correspondents and military officials at a speed of 600 miles an hour and at an altitude of about 100 feet.

The Skyhawk is less than half the size of many current jet fighters. It is equipped to carry atomic bombs, rockets, machine-guns, and missiles. After the demonstration, the visitors watched a rocket sled shoot down a three-mile track at a top speed of 1140 miles an hour—one and a half times the speed of sound.
