CHRISTCHURCH BEATS AVON ROYALS

. Two exciting matches marked the Canterbury Softball Association’s competitions at English Park on Saturday.

In a curtain-raiser to the main match, Monowai. the unbeaten senior women’s team, trailed United up to the fifth innings, when a spell of fielding errors gave it an advantage which it held to the final innings to win 11-9. Home runs were scored by H. McCormick for Monowai and N. Brown for United. B. Makinson, the Canterbury and South Island representaative pitcher, pitched impeccably, with several spells of completely unplayable balls.

The main game between Avon Royals, leaders in the men’s senior section, and Christchurch ended in a meritorious win for Christchurch, 12-11. Christchurch was held without score up to- its sixth innings, R. Kinley, the Avon Royals pitcher, showing the form that won him representative honours.

With Avon Royals leading 11-0 in the sixth innings, the result looked a foregone conclusion, but with a devastating rally, Christchurch made six runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to win the game. Home runs were hit by D. Clinch and R. Beswick, both of Christchurch.
