British Reserves Increase

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, November 2. Britain’s gold and dollar reserves rose by 35,000,000 dollars during October and were at 2,936,000,000 dollars on October 31, the Treasury announced today. Defence aid from the United States during the month amounted to 17,000.000 dollars, the announcement added. The European Payments Union provided 8,000,000 dollars in gold and dollars in respect of September, and 2,000,000 dollars were paid to creditors of the union in bilateral settlements. On the provisional figures for the month, Britain had a surplus of £5,000,000 with the European Payments Union, which is due to be settled in November. Half will be paid in gold and dollars and the other half will go to the reduction of Britain’s debt to the union.
