LONDON STRIKE
New Dispute In Docks
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) • LONDON, November 3. About 5000 dockers went on strike today as a third stoppage hit London’s troubled dockland. The men walked out after dock gate meetings in protest against a dock firm which dismissed several workers for refusing to work with non-union lorry drivers. This same labour grievance started the second dock strike which began on Monday after the big October stoppage had been settled.
Last night about 6000 dockers who had stopped work agreed to return to the docks this morning, but as some of them went back the new dispute broke out. The strike leaders told one mass meeting today that workers dismissed for refusing to recognise the nonunion lorry drivers had not been reinstated. This was described today as “victimisation.”
Many dockers on strike yesterday decided today to postpone returning to work until they hear the result of a] meeting this morning to discuss the latest strike.
Mr Vic Marney, leader of the unofficial strikers belonging to the Transport and General Workers’ Union in the nation wide strike has threatened to bring out more men unless the dismissed workers are given back their jobs.
