ELEVATED RAILWAYS
Sir, —What a strange control we have of our railways. If the management only knew that the Waimakariri river had plenty of shingle—that an elevated railway could be put through from Kaiapoi to near Belfast, with modern gear at a very low cost! In fact they will go out of their way to bring the line to ground level so that the 1500 residents at Kainga, Stewart’s Gully, and Brooklands can have a few more crossing accidents. There are now three crossings between the Waimakariri and Chaneys corner. If the City Council and other local bodies, who own the 5000 acres publicly owned between Burwood Forest and the Waimakariri, were to wake up, three more elevated crossings could be planned. The City Council owns enough land to build a city; they value it at £2 an acre, and how many of the councillors know where it is?—Yours, etc., L. C. WALKER. October 24, 1954.
