BEAUTY OF CHRISTCHURCH
Sir,—While revelling in spring loveliness in Christchurch might it not be well to notice (admitting changes and loss of pioneer-planted “green glory” in portions of the city infrequented by tourists) that denudation is turning parts into a Sahara? Must beauty suffer gradual evacuation? Are bareness, ugliness, noise or other nuisances unavoidable accompaniments of industrial precincts? Is any survey of modern scientific planning methods for aesthetics and public health undertaken here? Are such applications made in New Zealand?—Yours, etc., BEHOLDEN TO BEAUTY. October 24, 1954.
