CITY ROADING WORKS

Sir, —In the City Council report of works estimates certain amounts were specified for roading, footpath, and channelling work in various districts. Seemingly, the works committee is not fully acquainted with the city’s essential requirements. The main Mount Pleasant road has not had any attention to footpath or channelling by the Christchurch City Council since joining Greater Christchurch. This refers to the residential portion from the Sumner road up to Seamount terrace. Residents are frequently in danger from traffic both ways on account of lack of protection by a defined footpath. Complaints have been made of near serious accidents. Some day a serious accident will result, which should and could be Avoided. Residents are wondering why new footpaths are being made for McCormick’s Bay residents, “who already have a safe footway and have only been ratepayers for a brief period. Residents of 20 to 30 years on main Mount Pleasant road have a genuine complaint.—Yours, etc., ONE OF MANY. October 3, 1954. [“The work done on the McCormick’s Eay road was to clean up an area that has been dirty, untidy, and ill-drained for many years,’’ said Mr E. Somers, the City Engineer, when he was asked to comment on this letter.]
