GENDARME NOW SCRATCHED

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 5. The New Zealand horse, was scratched from the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, the Caulfield Cup, and the Melbourne Cup this afternoon. His trainer, Fred Smith, said in Sydney today that Gendarme had not pleased him since he was beaten by Advocate in the Colin Stephen Stakes at Randwick yesterday. Smith added: “I telephoned his owner, Mr W. S. Goosman, in New Zealand, and we scratched the horse today.” Gendarme was solidly backed for the Caulfield Cup, and third favourite for the Melbourne Cup. He lost his Sosition as outright favourite for the lelbourne Cup after his defeat by Advocate. The withdrawal of Gendarme will mean a fortune in “dead” money for bookmakers. It is known there has been some heat In Gendarme’s near foreleg for some time. The leading jockey, Neville Sellwood, will now be free to ride Advocate in the Metropolitan.
