RACING Mr D. W. J. Gould Praises Randwick Improvements
“Randwick has improved a great deal since I was there previously, and the general state of the course, with its beautiful surroundings and flowers, is . magnificent,” said Mr D. W. J. Gould, who, in company with Mr P. D. Hall, returned to Christchurch yesterday by Tasman Airways DC-6, after a brief visit to Sydney. Messrs Gould and Hall attended the first two days of the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting. Mr Gould is the honorary treasurer and a committeeman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and Mr Hall is a steward and committeeman of the club. Another member of the visiting party, Mr K. Austin, also a steward and committeeman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, has remained in Sydney for the final two days of the meeting, which will be held tomorrow and on Saturday. ‘The standard of racing over there has improved greatly,” said Mr Gould. It is now very well conducted and clean.” Commenting on the A.J.C. Derby winner, Prince Delville, Mr Gould said: ‘‘Although small, he is a high-
quality, staying-bred colt, and his success was most impressive, for he was travelling easily at the end of the race.” Of Prince Cortauld, he said: “He is a high-quality, medium-sized horse, and he gave a splendid performance in the Epsom; but he was beaten into second place by a horse of the same age, to which he conceded nearly a stone in weight.” New Zealand horses w«re enjoying a wonderful run in Australia at present, and should continue to win good races there, said Mr Gould. When asked what he now thought of Gendarme’s prospects for the Metropolitan Handicap, to be decided on the last day, on Saturday, Mr Gould said he considered it very unlikely that Gendarme would start in the race. “He gave a splendid performance in the Colin Stephens Stakes on Monday, but he was beaten by another fine galloper, Advocate, which conceded him weight,” he said. “Gendarme is required to concede weight to Advocate in the Metropolitan, and I doubt if his connexions will ask him to do it.”
