NEW ROAD-RAIL COMMITTEES
Transport Alliance’s Discussion EXPERIMENT IN SIX CENTRES s (New Zealand Press Association) < GISBORNE, October 5. ( The hope that the road-rail com- 1 mittees now being formed would 1 “provide a chance for road and rail 1 to get together round a table and discuss their problems on a common- a sense basis” was expressed by Mr H. 1 O. England (Auckland) at the annual i conference of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance at Gisborne to- i day. c “We may be able to hope for a 1 degree of co-ordination and co-opera- s tion rather than the cut-throat com- I petition that we have seen in the ( past on the part of the Railways (. Department,” he said. “We should go I forward and give these committees a r trial, and show by our own attitude f what we mean by willing co-opera- c tion.” „ c The secretary (Mr H. C. Campbell) s explained that the committees were J being set up in six centres as a trial, t and if the scheme worked well they f would be extended to every centre 1 where they could do some good. “I think this is a good thing,” said the president (Mr W. D. Thompson). “Previously, the railways have had all the say. Now we will be able to have our say.” Mr A. A. Heenan said that the committees were worth a trial. If all the parties did not co-operate the whole thing would be washed out within a month.
